How to Fix EcoFlow “Overload” Error (Even with Nothing Plugged In)
It is one of the most common—and frustrating—glitches for EcoFlow owners: the “Overload” warning flashing on your Delta or River series screen when absolutely nothing is connected. Before you ship your unit back for warranty, follow this diagnostic guide to reset your internal sensors and clear the “phantom” fault.
Immediate Reset Procedures
If your screen is displaying a 50Hz/60Hz flashing overload icon or Error Code 502/121 without a load, the unit’s internal Battery Management System (BMS) or inverter logic has likely become “stuck.” Try these steps in order:
| Reset Level | Action Required | Success Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Restart | Unplug all inputs/outputs and restart the unit. | High for simple bugs |
| BMS Hard Reset | Hold the main power button for 10–15 seconds while unplugged. | Effective for “phantom” icons |
| Full Calibration | Discharge to 0% until it dies, then charge to 100% without stopping. | Solves State of Charge (SoC) errors |
⚠️ Check Your Frequency Settings!
Sometimes, an “Overload” error is actually a configuration mistake. If you accidentally hold the AC button for too long, you might switch your unit from 60Hz to 50Hz (or vice versa). This can cause some units to trigger a fault state. Switch it back to your local standard (60Hz for North America) via the EcoFlow App or by holding the AC button for 10 seconds.
Why “Phantom” Overloads Happen
A phantom overload often occurs when the State of Charge (SoC) is incorrectly calibrated. The BMS thinks the battery is empty (or full) when it isn’t, causing the inverter to “panic” and shut down.
Other causes include extreme temperatures (too hot or too cold) or a pending firmware update that addresses known bugs in the EPS (Emergency Power Supply) mode switching logic.
Steps to Restore a Bricked Unit
- 1️⃣ Isolate the Unit: Disconnect all solar panels, car chargers, and wall plugs. The unit cannot reset properly if any power is flowing in or out.
- 2️⃣ Forced Power Down: Press and hold the power button until the screen says “OFF.” Wait at least **2 hours** to allow capacitors to fully drain and internal components to cool.
- 3️⃣ Firmware Push: Even if the unit seems broken, it may still connect to Bluetooth. Attempt a firmware “refresh” from the EcoFlow smartphone app.
