Why a lower number is not the whole answer

  • The protected device has a hold-up limit. One desktop power supply may ride through a short gap that reboots another.
  • The power event matters. A complete outage, brownout, distorted waveform, and rapid voltage fluctuation do not always produce identical transfer behavior.
  • Operating mode matters. Some stations call the feature EPS rather than UPS, and settings may change how the unit responds.
  • Pass-through is not the same as an online UPS. A double-conversion online UPS continuously powers the load through its inverter and therefore has no battery-transfer gap.
  • Communication matters for servers and NAS. A dedicated UPS can often signal equipment to shut down safely through USB or network management.
